Flower Watching: A Field Sketcher’s Guide to the Lives of Blooming Plants will be on shelves February 2!
“A gorgeous book, full of invitations to awaken our senses, open our imaginations, and let our creativity blossom. From wild spaces to edges of asphalt, the rich relationships between flowers and other beings come alive.”
—David George Haskell, author of How Flowers Made our World
“A love letter to the beauty, wonder, and joy we experience when we slow down and focus our attention on the plants around us.”
—John Muir Laws, artist, naturalist, author, and educator

The seed was sown two and a half years ago, when Storey Publishing invited me to write a book about flowers. Accepting the invitation, I followed a path from root to stem to flower to bee to habitat’s embrace.
The book is a vibrant, fully illustrated portal into flower observation, with an accessible introduction to flower biology and relationships. In it, we delve into flower’s most important relationships and meet all of the different kinds of pollinators, from bees to bats. We consider the ways that flowering plants fit into their habitats, and we explore the ways that looking closely at flowers connects us to the rest of the natural world.
Accompanying each chapter is a step by step guide to observing and drawing a different flower in the field using simple tools.
Putting the book together was a pleasure from start to finish, as was working with everyone at Storey.
Flower Watching: A Field Sketcher’s Guide to the Lives of Blooming Plants is available for pre-order, and I am hard at work planning a series of events, in person and online, to introduce the book to you.
