I am trying to get to know the different species of eucalyptus that grow around my Northern California town. This page was drawn from specimens of red ironbark (Eucalyptus sideroxylon) collected on a walk along a drainage channel that has become a wonderful urban riparian space. At least two species of eucalyptus were planted there long ago as a windbreak between the ag fields to the north and the neighborhoods to the south.
The drawing was made with sanguine colored pencil and painted using Neocolor II. I used a little more colored pencil for details and texture.
Next up is to focus on the deeply grooved red bark that gives this species its name, along with the jewel-like red sap that it oozes prodigiously.
